The original settlement of Kazan, lying on the left bank of the Volga river, was founded in the 13th century by the Khan of the Golden Horde known as Kazan-Khan 45 km from the city known as Kazan today. The current day city of Kazan is one of the biggest and most important cultural and industrial centres in Russia. The city has a population of 1.2 million comprised of over 77 different ethnic groups. Kazan is the capital of a multi-national republic that occupies the area between the Volga and the Ural Mountains.
Kazan is served by a system of trams, trolleybuses and buses.
