Lake Baikal

Lake Baikal, ”the blue eye of Siberia”, is one of the world’s most beautiful, old and deep lakes. The water in the lake is crystal clear and you can in some places see up to a depth of 40 metres. The lake is ribbon like in form (approx. 650km by 50 km) and at its deepest is 1 940 metres. The surrounding fauna is rich and home to a number of rare species. Perhaps most well known are the famous earless seals and the omul fish that is a part of the salmon family. In the forest surrounding the lake brown bears, wild deer and reindeer can be found and in 1998 the lake and surrounding area was added to the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.

Turism around the lake has increased during recent years and many nature lovers travel to the area to see and photograph the beautiful landscape as well as the rare species. The main tourist destination the small town of Listvyanka 65 km outside Irkutsk and home to just 2,500 people. During the winter you are advised to travel to Listvyanka via bus while during the summer months you can catch a boat ride from Irkutsk. Boat trips to other locations around the lake are organised from both Irkutsk and Listvyanka during the summer season. For those staying around the lake for a few days Olkhon is an exciting destination. If you want to see the whole of the lake then there is a boat trip between Irkutsk and Severobaikalsk on the northern edge of the lake. The 830 km long trip takes about 11 hours. From Severobaikalsk you can take the train eastwards Tynda and Chabarovsk , fly to Ulan-Ude or travel back to Irkutsk.
