Comments:
Europeans do not need a visa for Ukraina. Maps of Ukraina and Odessa are available in the basement of the mall in Grezeskaya Ploschod). Excursion to Danube-Delta has been organized by Pelikan-Travel (www.pelican-danube-tour.com; only in russian) downtown, north of pedestrian prestrinct in Uliza Gogolaja. 200 Greven for an excursion from 07:00 - 22:00. Two-times a 4 h busride, 3 h on the boat to the estuary and hot meal and tea. It is easy to change money, when you carry Euros in bills. Be aware, that the bills are without earmarks and are not ripped (eingerissen). Greeven may be changed back either in Euros or Dollars without any problems. Trolley-buses are for -,50 Greeven, Marschroutkas are for 1,25 Greeven. I like trolley-buses better, as they are not so over-crowded. Local commuting starts around 06:00 a.m. (trolley-bus around 07:00 a.m.) and stops around 11:00 p.m. We find it inaccurate, that there is shown at the bus-stations that they run till midnight. I presume, it's in order to feed the taxidriver. The easiest way downtown is to take the trolley-bus no. 9 from the University to that station, when you have the Opera-House in the back. Be aware that that is not the terminal (!!), as bus-9 is a ring-line. We prefere to walk in the morning from ARKADIA to the hostel, instead of discussing with the taxidriver about the price. Both is o.k. Taxiride is around 15,- Euros, walking is 25 min. without the fear of getting raped in the middle of the night. There is a supermarket in front of the University. There are more elsewhere (downtown and near the hostel). They are equipped as german supermarkets are. You will not miss anythink (food, drings, sweats, mineral water, toilet paper).

Accommodation: 5/5
Wonderful! The swiss boy told us, that he understands under "hostel" an more improved accomodation. For me it was more than o.k. (generally with a private bathroom). I'm used to travel in Russia 20 years ago, and I brought my screwdriver and my little "Engländer". Especially for that price the hostel is o.k. As I discussed with Ann-Marie, try to explain a little bit more exactly, that this is a Ukrainian-Student-Hostel. Maybe people can understand better that this a moderate hostel for a very cheap price.

Favourite night club/restaurant/pub:
I had had the good luck, that we have been several students at that time (summer / high season). Ann-Maria is aware of that. Thus we spend a lot of time together. I choose ITAKA as the best night club for "abtanzen" / dancing. It is astonishing, what the ukrainian built for the summer season. Gate fee is around 10,- Euros, cocktailes are reasonable, beer is cheap (for germans). Second choice is the night club IBIZA. That is interesting place to stay and to watch the wealthier Ukrainian people. It is not for dancing (too crowded on a tiny dancefloor). Night clubs start not earlier than midnight, but be in ARKADIA area at 10:00 p.m. to watch the peoble passing by. ARKADIA is not for eating-out (schrebergarden-style, not a bargain). Best restaurant is the "GREEN CAFE" (as we named it) just back to the hostel. Beer is inexpensive, food is good and at a good price. Restaurants downtown (pedestrian prestrinct) are of course expensive. But if you must entertain yourself, it is also a good idea eating-out there and not eat too much. Cafe, tea or water are for a modest price. Some days we have been in a Restaurant/pub in the Dolphin-beach area. Food was good, price (in german eyes) cheap. There is a Supermarket in front of the University. In the third floor there is a self-service restaurant. Food is for 3,- Euros (vegetarian) or for 5,- Euro (Schnitzel). On a Monday we have been in the GEOGIAN RESTAURANT on the right hand side down to/near ARKADIA. It seems to be famous (every body at University knows it) and it was full on a monday night around 9:00 p.m. (we booked in advance). In german eyes it was cheap (1/2 ltr. Wodka, 2 bottles of wine, courses for each of our 8 peoples: The bill was around 80,- Euros). The others, which spoke russian better, care for me and so I have had the chance to watch an audience in the Musical-theater too. It was worthwhile; we watch it with the airconditioning down, I guess 42 °C. Go when the weather is bad !

What would you like to improve?
Nothing ! Maybe: Tell other students, that there are buses from greater cities in Germany (Europa ?) going directly to Odessa. Quality is like in all EURO-LINERS and reaonable. Price is the half of an airplane ticket, and for me it was interesting to see the countryside by passing by.

How did you find out about AMBergh?
I checked the InterNet.

Reason for your studies:
As we build a chemical plant in Kalusch, west Ukraine, I decided to re-inprove my russian.
