Information about Shijiazhuang!

A group of language students from Shijiazhuang standing by a Chinese temple.

Located a convenient one hour south of Beijing, it is a large, rapidly growing, and very modern Chinese city, 280 kilometers (170 miles) south of Beijing. With over 9 million native Mandarin speakers and very little western influence, Shijiazhuang offers a very high level of daily immersion. Close enough to Beijing for a weekend away, far enough away to avoid the crowds of tourists, Shijiazhuang provides an excellent alternative for those wanting to jump into Chinese language and culture.

Shijiazhuang, the capital of Hebei Province, neighbours Beijing and Tianjin in the north, Bohai Sea in the east and the Taihang Mountain in the west. Shijiazhuang is located to the north of the Yellow River.

Once a small village, it developed under modern railway construction. The growth of Shijiazhuang into one of China´s major cities began in 1905. No one could have predicted that this small, unknown village would have developed rapidly into the modern capital city of Hebei Province. Shijiazhuang is home to many significant cultural relics, such as the oldest stone-arch bridge in China, Zhaozhou Bridge, and one of China´s three hanging temples Qiaoloudian Hall (Bridge-Tower Hall). The grand Taihang Mountain provides charming natural scenery. Mt. Cangyan Scenic Area and Zhangshiyan attract visitors from all over China and the world.

Shijiazhuang is not an international city. The city is the largest base for the pharmaceutical industry and is also one of the most important textile industry bases. Shijiazhuang has 590,000 hectares of cultivated land and is the main source of high quality cotton, pears, dates and walnuts in Hebei province.
