China faces an over-skilled labor force

China needs to enhance vocational education in order to end the oversupply of university graduates and the shortage of technicians. China's rise to become an economic giant has been one of the fastest in history. The Chinese people have a high regard for education and understand that the way to improve the lives for successive generations is through higher levels of education. The concern of the Chinese government is that China has overemphasized the theoretical skills taught in universities and underemphasized the technical skills taught at trade schools. According to authorities, graduates are taking white-collar jobs with lower salaries over higher paying blue-collar jobs.

Wu Daohuai, director of the department of vocational skills development under the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, said, "The education system should suit the demands of the labor market as the economy develops. More resources should be put toward vocational education."
