Eastern countries far more optimistic than their Western counterparts

People living in developing countries are more optimistic than those in the Western world, according to a survey conducted by YouGov.

Just two of the 17 countries YouGov surveyed had more than one out of five people thinking the world was getting better, while the majority had more than half of their people thinking it was getting worse. China was the most optimistic country surveyed - with its population buoyed by its growing economic and geopolitical influence. 41 per cent of Chinese internet users surveyed said they were optimistic about the world's future, compared to 33 per cent who said things were "getting worse".

The percentage of optimists in China is four times the global average of 10 per cent, indicating that the recent trembles in its stock market seem to have had little impact on the nation's confidence. The sheer rate of growth in China, and a prioritization of health, a measure which is objectively improving, in personal goals, may be contributing to China's sunny outlook."
