2013 Yi Ethnic Tiger Culture Festival of Shuangbai County

On 21 March the festival took place in Shuangbai County. It is the proof of tiger-totem worshipping of the Yi ethnic group and the highlight is what is locally called “tiger dance” (or “lao hu sheng” in Chinese). Other main ceremonies include “receiving the tiger” and “seeing off” the tiger. When dancing, men are disguised as tigers, mimicking tigers vividly. Performed as part of the ancestral sacrifice-offering ceremony, the Tiger Dance is choreographed to display the production, life, multiplication, and the worldview of the Yi people in the primitive society.
