Jounieh - An excursion in Beirut, Lebanon
Jounieh is a Mediterranean coastal city about 15 kilometers north of Beirut. It is known for its seaside resorts and nightclubs, as well as its old market (souq), ferry, and cable car (le téléphérique), which takes passengers up the mountain to the shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in Harissa. Above Jounieh, and on the way to Harissa, a small hill named Bkerke, overlooking the Jounieh bay, is the seat of the Patriarch of the Maronite Catholic Church. It is known to be the largest Maronite city in the world. Today the population of Jounieh with suburbs exceeds 200,000. By the middle of the century, Jounieh is expected to become a suburb of Beirut. Before the civil war, Jounieh, was a sleepy fishing village. With Beirut sliced in half by the conflict, wealthy Christians from Beirut turned to Jounieh as a safer place. On the south side of town, the old city centre retains its charm. The north side of town is nowadays crowded with bars and casinos lacking all sense of charm. A ride with the téléférique is entertaining. You will get a nice view of Jounieh and the bay from Harissa. You can get from Beirut to Jounieh by bus or service taxi from Dawra bus station in Beirut. If you catch a taxi that is going further north, ask to be let out near the téléférique. There is a pedestrian bridge across the highway leading to the centre of town.
