Cairo is the capital of Egypt, known officially as al-Qãhirah. It is the largest city in the Middle East and Africa. Larger Cairo including Giza has about 17 million inhabitants. "Modern" Cairo was founded 969 AD near the ancient Heliopolis. It was named "the city of a thousand minarets". Cairo has more than 500 mosques, the most famous are the mosques of Ibn Tulun, Qala´un and sultan Hassan, but the one dominating the skyline is the marble mosque of Muhammad Ali in the citadel overlooking the city.

Cairo is home to the world´s first university, al-Azhar, founded in 970, which serves as the most important centre of Islamic learning for the whole Sunni world. Another university is the American University, established in 1919. There are also many excellent institutes and private schools that offer a wide range of different educational opportunities.

Cairo has an abundance of remarkable sites. There are ancient temples, tombs, Christian churches, an Opera house, magnificent Muslim monuments, and excellent museums, of which the Egyptian Museum is among the foremost in the entire world. In Cairo there is something for everyone. And Cairo is the perfect centre for visiting other parts of Egypt.
