The Great Sphinx of Giza

The Great Sphinx of Giza - An excursion in Cairo, Egypt
The Great Sphinx of Giza "The Father of Fear") is a half-human, half-lion Sphinx statue on the Giza Plateau at the west bank of the Nile River, near modern-day Cairo. The largest single-stone statue in the world, it stands 73 metres (241 feet) long, 6 m (20 ft) wide, and 20 m (65 ft) high. Commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians in the 3rd millennium BC, it is the earliest known monumental sculpture. The Great Sphinx faces due east and houses a small temple between its paws.

Most Egyptologists believe that the Great Sphinx was created by the Pharaoh Khafra and that the Sphinx therefore dates to his reign (2520-2494 BCE).

This monumental statue, the first truly colossal royal sculpture in Egypt, known as the Great Sphinx, is a national symbol of Egypt, both ancient and modern. The Great Sphinx is believed to be the most immense stone sculpture in the round ever made by man. The lion was a solar symbol in more than one ancient Near Eastern culture. The royal human head on a lion's body symbolized power and might, controlled by the intelligence of the pharaoh, guarantor of the cosmic order, or ma'at.
